I’m not an expert in UX design. I’m a newbie! Luckily, I’ve been able to meet some folks that have a lot of insight and are willing to help me as I’m getting started.

Here are the top five recurring themes:

  1. The job search takes some time. Be prepared to be searching for 4–6 months before you find the right fit.
  2. There are a lot of reputable ways to gain skills in UX and show what you can do. Self-taught folks can be just as talented as someone who went through a four-year degree or bootcamp. Willingness to learn and improve is what counts. Be able to explain your career path and why you are passionate about UX.
  3. Don’t feel like you have to do everything at once. Especially as a beginner, it takes time to learn and develop skills. It’s ok to not bombard yourself and get overwhelmed with doing it all at once.
  4. Your portfolio is really important. It shows your process and how you approach projects. Everyone who looks at it will be after something different and might scan everything else. Getting feedback is sometimes a struggle but definitely worth it.
  5. UX is a great profession! If you’re passionate about it and willing to take time to find a role for you, you’ll be happy. It is fulfilling work and in demand.
